Real-world examples

Inspection & report$400$1,000
Beam or wall-removal design$800$2,200
Full structural design$2,500$7,500

What affects the price

Scope of engineering. A single beam is quick; a whole extension or two-storey design takes many more hours.
Site investigation needs. If a geotechnical (soil) report is required, it's a separate cost of roughly $600–$1,500.
Existing documentation. Missing original plans mean the engineer must measure and model the existing structure first.
Complexity & risk. Sloping sites, reactive soils, heritage buildings and unusual designs add analysis time.
Turnaround time. Urgent reports and designs often attract a priority fee.

Tips before you post

Check the engineer is registered where required — most states now mandate registration (RPEQ, PE registration or equivalent) for structural work.
Engage the engineer before removing anything that might be load-bearing — retrofitting a fix costs far more than designing it first.
Ask whether council or certifier queries after lodgement are covered in the fixed fee.
