What affects the price

Stone type. Reconstituted and veneer products cost less than sawn sandstone, bluestone or granite.
Construction method. Veneer over a block core is faster; full solid stone walling takes far longer to lay.
Heritage matching. Sourcing matching stone and replicating old jointing is slow, specialist work at a premium.
Footings and structure. Stone is heavy — proper footings and, for retaining walls, engineering are essential extras.
Access. Stone deliveries and handling on tight or sloping sites add labour.

Tips before you post

Ask to see walls the mason built five-plus years ago — quality stonework shows in how it settles and weathers.
For retaining walls, confirm engineering and drainage are included; stone walls fail from water, not weight.
On heritage homes, check whether council heritage rules dictate the stone and mortar you must use.
