Real-world examples

Low timber garden wall$1,500$3,500
Concrete sleeper wall$5,000$9,500
Engineered wall over 1 metre$12,000$25,000

What affects the price

Wall face area. Length times height is the core quantity — taller walls also need heavier posts and footings.
Material. Treated timber is cheapest but has the shortest life; concrete sleepers and masonry cost more and last decades.
Engineering & approvals. Walls above roughly 1 m usually need an engineer's design and council sign-off, adding $1,500–$4,000.
Drainage & backfill. Ag-pipe, gravel backfill and stormwater connection are essential and add real cost.
Access & excavation. Machine access keeps digging cheap; hand excavation on tight sites multiplies labour.

Tips before you post

Check your council's height threshold before designing — approval requirements kick in at 0.5 m in some areas.
Never skip the drainage behind the wall; water pressure is what destroys retaining walls.
Concrete sleepers cost more than timber upfront but usually work out cheaper over the life of the wall.
