Real-world examples

Treated pine, ground level$3,000$6,000
Merbau hardwood deck$7,000$12,000
Elevated composite deck$13,000$22,000

What affects the price

Board material. Treated pine is cheapest; hardwood mid-range; composite highest up front but near zero maintenance.
Deck height & footings. Elevated decks need more structure, posts and footings — and often balustrade.
Site access & ground. Sloping, rocky or hard-to-reach sites add labour and excavation.
Size & shape. Larger and non-rectangular decks use more material and cutting time.
Extras. Stairs, balustrade, built-in seating and lighting all add to the total.

Tips before you post

Composite costs more to install but saves on oiling and sanding over its life.
Decks over a certain height or area may need council approval — ask your builder.
Merbau is the most popular hardwood in Australia and a good value middle ground.
