I've been on the tools for years. Gardening is a job people often underprice in their heads. The mowing is quick. The green waste, the overgrown corner and the steep side path are what take the time. This guide sets out the published Sydney numbers, credits each one, and shows how to compare gardening quotes fairly.
Post your job free as a homeowner. Up to three local tradies can quote.
Sydney Gardeners doesn't say clearly whether its figures include GST, so check on each quote. Your garden's size, condition and how much waste needs to go will move the price.
One off clean up. For a garden that's got away from you, a home you're selling, or a new place. Expect more time on the first visit: cutting back, weeding, and a lot of green waste.
Regular maintenance. Mowing, edging, light pruning and weeding on a schedule, like fortnightly or monthly. Once a garden is under control, each visit is usually shorter and more predictable.
Our sources don't publish separate Sydney prices for clean ups vs regular visits, so we won't put numbers on it. Ask gardeners to quote both a first visit and an ongoing rate.
Size. More lawn, more beds, more hedges, more time.
Overgrowth. A garden that hasn't been touched for a year takes far longer than one that's kept up.
Green waste. Taking waste away costs time and tip fees. If your council's green bin can take some of it, that may help. Check your council's green waste rules, such as the City of Sydney's waste pages, for what's allowed and whether the council picks up bulky garden waste.
Access. Narrow side paths, stairs, steep blocks and no parking all slow things down.
Season. Spring and early summer growth means more cutting back, and gardeners tend to be busier.
These are the common gardening jobs in Sydney:
Our source gives an overall hourly range (above), but no dated Sydney prices for each of these tasks, so we've left those out rather than guess. List the tasks you need with photos and gardeners can price each one.
A gardener maintains what's already there: mowing, pruning, weeding, mulching, tidying up.
A landscaper builds or changes things: new garden beds, retaining walls, paving, turf, irrigation, full redesigns.
If you want your garden kept looking good, you want a gardener. If you want it to look different, you probably want a landscaper or garden designer. Our garden designer cost guide covers the design side.

Give gardeners enough detail to price your garden properly:
A gardener who brings a trailer and takes all the waste away will price very differently from one who leaves it in your bin. Some quote by the hour, others a fixed price for the visit. Experience, equipment and insurance all play a part too. Compare what's included, then compare the price.
Every price on this page comes from a business or website that published it, and we've credited each one and the date we read it. We haven't changed or averaged them. Prices change, and businesses update their own pages, so click through to check the latest before you rely on a figure. We've also left out any price we couldn't find a dated, credited source for, rather than guessing. If you're not sure whether a figure includes GST, ask the tradie before you accept a quote. The surest way to know what your job costs is to get real quotes on it.
A guide gets you in the ballpark. A quote gets you the real number for your place. Describe the job once, add a few photos, and local tradies who do this work can quote on it.
