A paved area is one of the most satisfying outdoor upgrades — a patio, a path, a pool surround that turns unused ground into somewhere you actually spend time. Laying pavers is mostly groundwork. A paver excavates the area, compacts a base of road base and bedding sand, sets the falls so water runs away from the house, lays the pavers to line and level, then cuts the edges, sets edge restraints and fills the joints. The paving you admire is the last and quickest step; the base is where the days go.
The material shapes both look and price: concrete pavers are the budget-friendly workhorse, clay brick pavers are classic and durable, and natural stone like travertine, bluestone or granite is the premium finish. Removing an existing surface, dealing with drainage, and setting the levels around an existing house or pool are the jobs that turn a simple patio into a bigger one.
Paving is quoted per square metre, so the area and the material together set the band — a modest concrete-paver patio lands in the low thousands, while a large natural-stone entertaining area or pool surround climbs well beyond that. Premium stone can cost several times the per-metre rate of concrete pavers before labour is even counted.
The site does the rest. Flat, clear, easy-dig ground is cheap to prepare; sloping blocks, poor drainage, existing surfaces to rip up, and intricate patterns or lots of cuts all add labour. Treat the figures here as indicative — the live prices give a starting range, but area, material and how much groundwork your site needs are what set the real quote.
Paving sits within landscaping and building work, so whether a licence is required depends on your state and the size and type of job — larger structural paving and anything tied to drainage or retaining can cross into licensed territory. Check what your state asks for, and look for a paver whose quote spells out the base preparation, not just the pavers and the price per metre.
The base is where you separate the professionals from the weekend crews. Ask specifically about the depth of the compacted base, how they'll set the falls for drainage, and what edge restraint they use — because a patio laid on thin, uncompacted ground will move no matter how good the pavers look on day one. A paver who talks base depth unprompted is the one to trust.
